The Kugelbake

Cuxhaven's landmark

The sea mark Kugelbake, firstly build in 1704, was replacing the natural point of positioning, a cluster of trees. Since then it marks the nothernmost point of Lower Saxony as well as the end of the river Elbe and the beginning of the North Sea. It idicates the water lane for shipping.

The wooden Kugelbake is approx. 30 meters high and was distroyed a couple of times in the course of the centuries. Main reasons for this were storm floods, changes of the run of the water lane and the security during wars.

Since 1907 the Kugelbake is illustrated on the city coat of arms and is the landmark of the harbor town.

In 2001 the sea mark loses its nautical relevance.

In the year 2002 the charity 'Stiftung Kugelbake Cuxhaven' was founded and attends since then to the restoration of cuxhaven's monument.

The geographical position is:

53°53,6´N

08°40,9´E
